Dispatches from the Front - After Action Reports

CincyCon 2014 - The Battle of Ferozeshah

Well, Cincycon has come and gone again, and with it the annual presentation of the Battle of Ferozeshah. This year was a fun, exciting game to watch. After 2013's debacle, I stressed to the British players that a frontal assault on entrenched, non-disordered troops would be  "bad thing". Apparently, I stressed this so much that the British elected to avoid the defenses almost entirely.

Which made for a very interesting game.

The British strength is in their cavalry arm. Unfortunately, they used the cavalry in a less than optimal fashion. This let the Sikhs pin down the British infantry with their numerous, but weak native horse units, while they shifted the Sikh infantry to meet the changing orientation of the battlefield. Better use of the cavalry and horse guns could have allowed the British to more quickly turn a flank and gain an advantage.

The game played fast enough that we moved into the second day of the action. The British started to gain traction, but countering this was the appearance of an additional Sikh Corps entering from off table. The British didn't like the looks of another big gun park arriving and had some grim expressions. It's a shame as I think it was still a toss-up as to who would win.

I'll bring the game back in 2015, but would like to add Sobraon to the mix as well.

Pictures would be nice, but as referee, I was a bit too busy to take pictures. I'll see what I can scrape up from my friends and players.
